International PEN is working with PEN centres to create an international network of Free the Word! literary events and festivals. Free the Word! celebrates the best in contemporary writing from around the world. Each Free the Word! festival is rooted in its local culture but is international in outlook. The aims of Free the Word! are to:
– Bring writers together to share and explore ideas and experiences across cultures
– Open conversations about how literature can transform, influence and excite
– Contribute to the flow of literature around the world, through translation and promotion of writing
– Introduce readers to established and emerging voices
– Provide space for debate and dialogue between readers and writers
