City Noises is a collaborative arts project using sound, media and digital technology as a means to relate to contemporary city life. Distinctive practitioner based organisations from London, Budapest and Helsinki have commissioned artists to work together on a series of events and exhibitions taking place in each participating city over the last year. Each city exhibition has been created as a collaboration between the host organisation, artists group and members of the local community. Artists have worked with the practitioner organisations to develop collaborative programmes involving local people.
The outcome of these interventions can be viewed online at www.citynoises.org or blog.citynoises.org . In this way, people from London, Budapest, Helsinki have been connected through our shared pan European artistic endeavour. Each partner has brought something different to the table. Stream in London has led collaborative arts projects for many years, and is extending the collaborative scope of its creative practice internationally. Szovetseg39 is a gallery and artists grouping from Budapest using sound as a means to link different environment. Crucible Studio from Helsinki adds academic weight, expertise in practice based research and connections through to intellectual networks. Ravensbourne is a centre of excellence working with digital technologies and creative practice. The strength of City Noises lies in the diversity of skills and the mutual interest in using a collaborative, iterative process to understand and engage with the post modern city. Evaluation is a key part of the process. The partners will use it as means to understand their work and to leave a legacy for others wishing to develop similar projects in the future.
We are currently planning to host our Symposium at Ravensbourne in January 2013 where we will present our findings alongside work that has been produced as part of this programme. To expand the learning outcomes of this project we will be inviting other organisations and artists to join us at our symposium to discuss the importance and impact of producing outdoor artworks that engage communities on a local level.
If you would be interested in attending in our symposium or sharing your own experiences of presenting outdoor works please email Stream on [email protected] for more information on how to get involved with City Noises.
