The major travelling exhibition highlights the hybrity central to much modern European sculpture since the late 19th century. Taking a non-chronological approach, this show looks at the way the human form has been combined with those of the animal and vegetable worlds over the last 100 years. It focuses on how the fantastical, mythological, mechanical and biological all re-emerge in a post- Darwinian age. As a project, the travelling exhibition Against Nature functions as a vehicle for activity outside of the 3 exhibitions. The project attempts to mobilize art objects, and art historical & museological information & knowledge, passing and interconnecting these all between different countries, people & institutions. Not only museums in Germany, UK & NL but also Romanian Art Museum in Bucarest, Leiden University in NL and specialist researchers (i.e. FR) will be working together for a better understanding of the hybritysubject as a pan-European, very divers sculptural phenomenon.
