Heritage Europe was formed as “The European Association of Historic Towns and Regions” (EAHTR) by the Council of Europe in October 1999 as part of the initiative “Europe – A Common Heritage”. The project aims to promote the interests of Europe’s historic cities through international cooperation between heritage organisations and historic towns – sharing experience and good practice and promoting the sustainable management of historic areas. There are members in 30 European countries and membership arrangements represent over 1000 historic towns and cities.
