Next funding opportunity – Support for Literary Translation

The EU Culture programme 2007-2013 offers funding opportunities for the translation of European fiction (Strand 1.2.2). The maximum grant available is EUR 60 000, for the translation of up to 10 books.
The purpose is to stimulate the widest circulation of European literature among European citizens by supporting the translation of high-quality European literature into the different languages of the countries participating in the Culture programme.

How to apply?
The applicants must be publishing houses or publishing groups willing to translate works of fiction (novels, plays, poetry, etc.) from/into one of the 23 official languages of the EU Member States, plus Icelandic, Norwegian, Turkish, Croatian, Montenegrin, Macedonian, Serbian and Latin and Ancient Greek.
You can submit a slate of up to 10 books. Please note that the grants can only cover the actual translation costs (e.g. fees to translators) – the grants cannot be used for printing, publishing or promotion costs.
Also note that the works should have been previously published and not already translated into the language proposed for translation.

When to apply?
The next deadline is 3 February 2012 at 11am UK time. There will be one more deadline in early Feb 2013.

Proposal of “Creative Europe” announced

The European Commission announced its detailed proposal for ‘Creative Europe’, the new programme for the cultural and creative sector. The programme is part of the Commission’s proposal for a multi-annual budget for 2014-2020 and will bring the current Culture, MEDIA and MEDIA Mundus programmes together under a common frame which will support the cultural and creative sectors with a budget of €1.8 billion (which would be an increase of 37%).

Next funding opportunity: Cooperation projects with Third Countries (Strand 1.3.5)

The selected country for the current call is South Africa (deadline May 2012) and for the 2013 call it is Australia and Canada (deadline May 2013). To remind you, this strand is for Cooperation projects with (at least) three European arts/culture/heritage partners and (at least) a partner from the ‘selected Third Country’. More information about this Strand here. The application form for 2012 is not yet available but do look at the 2011 documents in the meantime, they can be found on the Executive Agency’s website here.

Results for Strand 1.3.5 – Cooperation Projects with Mexico

The results for the Cooperation Projects with Mexico (Strand 1.3.5 – deadline beginning May 2011) were published by the Exective Agency. Only one UK application (out of 8 submitted projects from the UK) was selected – submitted by Glasgow Sculpture Studios. See here for all the results.

HELP IS AT HAND!

Surgeries provide assistance for organisations at a relatively advanced stage in the development of an application to the EU Culture programme – i.e. organisations who have all (or nearly all) their partners and are in the process of completing the actual application forms.

Surgeries are not the place to go for general information on EU funding for culture or on the EU Culture programme itself. Apart from this website, general information is also provided via the Information Days offered by the CCP during the year, and the ‘CulturEuro’ seminars offered by Euclid (www.cultureuro.info).

To make best use of your surgery time (up to 45 minutes), it is essential that you send, prior to your surgery, a brief summary which includes:

which Strand you are applying to (1.1, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.3.5, 1.3.6, 2, 3.2)

a list of partner organisations and status of their commitment

your (draft) project summary (part C.7 of application form)

how your project will address the Culture Programme’s three specific objectives

a summary of the proposed project activities/events, and their locations

Surgeries will take place on Wednesday afternoons, 2-6pm in central London.
